the New disciplines

Sport Climbing

In sport climbing, climbers compete in three disciplines: lead climbing, bouldering and speed climbing. The climbers climb on a wall of +/- 12 metres by a fixed or flexible route, it depends on the discipline if time is an important factor or not.

Baseball / Softball

Baseball, is a team sport and has the same basis as cricket, both are played on a field with grass and sand. Baseball is played with a bat which hits a ball that has been pitched. The other team has to catch the ball as quickly as possible with a large leather glove. Softball is similar to baseball, the only difference are the rules.

In the sport of surfing, the winner in surfing is the surfer who scores the most points by riding waves. A panel of judges scores a surfer's ride by analysing the degree of difficulty, level of inventiveness, variance and progressiveness of each manoeuvre performed, and the amount of variety of manoeuvres performed on one ride. Each surfer's two highest scores in a time-limited heat are totalled for his/her final score to determine the winner.

The integration of karate, the “little brother of” judo, during the Olympics of Tokyo 2020 is quite symbolic. Karate originated in the Ryukyu Islands that make up Japan's present-day Okinawa Prefecture. Athletes are divided in two groups : kata and kumite. The first one is an individual style exercise, to work on the technique and show some a formalized sequence of movements which represent various offensive and defensive postures. These postures are based on idealized combat applications. Kumite (sparring) is the part of karate in which a person trains against an adversary, using the techniques learned from the kata.

In the skateboarding competitions, there will be two disciplines: park and street. For the park competition, a course that combines a dome-shaped bowl and a variety of complex curves will be used. For the street competition, a street-like course with stairs, curbs, slopes and rails will be used. Skaters will be judged in function of difficulty, skills, speed and originality.

Tokio, a contrast between tradition and modernity

Tokyo is a staggering city, you have the impression of being in an enormous anthill from its unbelievable and intimidating size, but this starkly contrasted with the incredible silence that prevails. This silence is due to the electric cars and sense of calmness exuding from the inhabitants of Tokyo. Nevertheless, the city is a mix between different genres and eras: nature, culture and ancient art are found amongst the futuristic buildings.

Shopping is seen as an art form in Japan. Ginza for example is globally known for it’s elegant boutiques, but also for its neon lighting and the famous Kabuki district with theatres. The city has a range of trendy neighbourhoods that are a dream for shopping: from the trendy Harajuko to the historic surroundings of Asakusa.

Tokyo is the gateway to the land of the rising sun and is notorious for being much more alive at night: neon lights and music take over the nightlife. One can enjoy atypical rock groups or karaoke bars with the pleasure of a locally brewed sake and end the evening in a typical “capsule hotel”.

Our favourites

Japan is often associated with animations and manga, the Ghibli Studio is an indisputable example of this. In the land of the gods Miyazaki Hayao is the master of these animations. He designed a unique building where much of his work is displayed and this is a must see for all those who are passionate about animations

Theatre in Japan, with all due respect, is not to be compared with theatre in the rest of the world. Actors wear masks and refined costumes in bright colors. The biggest and most famous theatre Kabuki is the Kabukiza.

The imperial palace is still surrounded by its original moat. The magnificent doors and lookout towers which are set regular intervals from each other still dominate the outside view of the palace. De Nijubashi, is an elegant bridge with two arches, which brings us to the main entrance that is open to the public on special occasions.
